  Trinity Study 2008 Haplogroup results
Based on the published data from the 2008 Trinity Study, we ran the test members through our R-L21 haplogroup analysis program.

"Genetic Investigation of the Patrilineal Kinship Structure of Early Medieval Ireland" by Brian McEvoy, Katharine Simms, and Daniel G. Bradley.  Published in the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY

Genotype data is published at http://www.gen.tcd.ie/molpopgen/resources.php

Outline

Data from McEvoy et al 2008 - 184 additional test data to be added to the table below from the 2006 dataset

Brian McEvoy, Katharine Simms, Daniel G. Bradley.
Genetic Investigation of the Patrilineal Kinship Structure of Early Medieval Ireland.
American Journal of Physical Anthropology 2008

There were 17 markers of which we could reuse 15 markers.  Based on the FTDNA table for genetic distance, if a member had a GD of 4 to any one the 40 current and speculative R-L21 Projects we counted it as a genetic match to the haplogroup(s).   Using the GD of 4 as belonging to a haplogroup is an assumption that will need to be revisited.

See Trinity Study Results workbook for details of the analysis of the Trinity 2008 Study test data.  They test members were grouped into Eoganacht surname, Dal Cais surname, with the control group chosen at random in Munster with no affiliation to Eoganachts or Dal Cais.

The 2008 case study took 247 individuals with 35 surnames in the province of Munster - labeled as Eoganacht, Dal Cais or a random Munster surname Group.

  • 212 were collected by postal request for relevant surname bearers
  • 35 were from randomly chosen individuals with surnames of Sullivan, Donoghue, McGillicuddy, McCarthy and Kennedy
    • The Eoganacht surnames in the study were
      • Sullivan, McCarthy, Donohue, McGillicudy, Cronin, Doran, Kirby, Moriarty, O'Callaghan, O'Donovan, O'Flynn, O'Keefe, O'Mahony, Quil
    • The Dal Cais surnames
      • Cahill, Clancy, Heffernan, Hickey, Kennedy, McGrath, McMahon, McNamara, O'Brien, O'Dea, O'Grady.
    • General Munster surnames (with no link to either grouping above) were
      • Carroll, Coffey, Healy, Maher, O'Connor, O'Driscoll, O'Leary, O'Loughlin, O'Shea, Whelan

184 more test individual DNA samples (similarly genotyped) were then added from the 2006 study and called the Munster sample Group.

We ran the above dna samples to analyze them by 40 R-L21 known and speculative Haplogroups then divided them into 4 categories:

  • South Irish
    • 1 Eoganacht/Dal Cais surname and Irish Type II - as expected
    • 2 Not Eoganacht/Dal Cais surname and Irish Type II - as expected
      • Future study - those without Eo'ganacht surnames South Irish
        • These families:
          • lived in the area before surnames (before 1000-1100 AD)
          • they are South Irish but descended from different groups other than Eo'ganacht
            • study family histories
              • what is the cultural history their ancestors belong?
              • what region do their family history state they belong?
              • what timeframe do their family histories include?
          • they are South Irish but their surnames were changed to their mother's maiden surname in order to inherit property from their mother

  • Not South Irish
    • 3 Eoganacht/Dal Cais surname and not Irish Type II
      • Those who are Eo'ganacht surnamed and South Irish fit the accepted pattern.  Those who are Eo'ganacht surnamed and have a non-South Irish haplogroup should be studied for how these haplogroups are related to the South Irish and the region in time and markers.
        • Those with Eo'ganacht surnames but Not South Irish
          • These families:
            • lived in the area before surnames (before 1000-1100 AD) and adopted Eo'ganacht surnames or
            • migrated to southern Ireland and later adopted Eo'ganacht surnames
            • they are not South Irish but their surnames were changed to their mother's Eoganacht maiden surname in order to inherit property from their mother
        • Haplogroups study
          • what if the original region of these haplogroups?
            • did they migrate to southern Ireland and change their names to Eo'ganacht surnames?
            • were they originally from southern Ireland?
          • what is their calculated date range?
            • did these haplogroups exist before the South Irish date range and before surnames and therefore exist in the region contemporary to the South Irish?
          • how do their markers compare to the South Irish?
    • 4 Not Eoganacht/Dal Cais surname and Not Irish Type II - not relevant to this study

  • Add 184 test members from the 2006 study (decision on selection needed)
  • Organize by Eoganacht and Dal Cais
  • List each category (1 - 4) by haplogroup
